EGL 121 Adolescent/Young Adult Literature
This course introduces students to the critical study of adolescent/young adult literature as a specific literary genre. Students read and analyze texts from a variety of literary forms (short story, novel/novella, poetry, non-fiction prose, drama) and periods within the genre with a focus upon both literary and genre specific conventions and themes. History and theories of adolescent/young adult literature, important authors in the genre, and social, cultural, and biographical contexts are covered. Related and cross-over genres (Children’s literature, Fantasy/Sci-Fi/Horror, dystopian, graphic novels, etc.) are introduced. Both “classic” and “popular” adolescent/young adult literature is studied with an emphasis upon varying purposes of the genre. R, W2, 11 (3 lecture hours)
