Course Descriptions

Lincoln Land Community College (LLCC) offers a wide variety of courses for students.

 

Credit Course Categories

Transfer Courses

Transfer courses provide college-level credit that is transferable to most senior colleges and universities. 

 

Occupational Courses

Occupational courses are primarily designed for students pursuing technical education or workforce preparation. Many occupational courses are transferable and many transfer courses are required components of occupational programs of study.  

 

Vocational Studies Courses

Vocational studies courses are career-oriented courses and provide college credit that, in most cases, is not transferable.

 

Adult Education Courses

Adult Basic Education (ABE)

Adult basic education courses provide instruction in reading, writing, and mathematics for adults ranging from non-readers through eighth-grade reading proficiency. Career development instruction is also included. 

 

Adult Secondary Education (ASE)

Adult secondary education courses prepare students for the General Education Development (GED) examination.

 

English as a Second Language (ESL)

ESL courses are designed for non-native English speakers. 

  • Beginning-level courses focus on reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
  • Intermediate-level courses emphasize comprehension, pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure and communication.
  • Advanced-level courses focus on refining English proficiency to support effective participation in academic and professional settings.

 

Course Locations and Delivery

Courses are offered in a variety of locations and formats. Students should consult the semester class schedule for specific course offerings. LLCC classes are offered at:

  • The LLCC campus in Springfield
  • Off-campus locations throughout the district
  • Online

 

Prerequisites, Corequisites and Advisories

When applicable, prerequisites are listed following the course description. Students are expected to satisfy all prerequisites before enrolling in a course.

Corequisites may be completed concurrently with or prior to enrollment in the course.

Some course descriptions include advisory notations, which provide recommended skill levels.

  • M – Math level recommendation
  • R – Reading level recommendation
  • W – Writing level recommendation

 

Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI)

Courses may include an Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) designation. General education IAI codes include:

C1, C2, F1, F2, F9, H1, H2, H3, H4, H5, H9, HF, HS, L1, LP, M1, P1, P2, P9, S1, S2, S3, S4, S5, S6, S7, S8, S9

 

Course Subject Codes

Each course is identified by a subject code indicating the discipline:

  • AG – Agriculture
  • ART – Art
  • BIO – Biological Sciences
  • BUS – Business
  • CHM – Chemistry
  • CS – Computer Science
  • CRJ – Criminal Justice
  • ECE – Early Childhood Education
  • EGR – Engineering
  • MC – Media & Communication Arts
  • MTH – Mathematics
  • PHY – Physics
  • PLS – Political Science
  • PSY – Psychology
  • TA – Theatre Arts

The numbers following the subject code identify the specific course.

 

Articulation and Course Applicability Codes

Each course description also includes a code indicating how the course may be applied. 

  • 11 – Courses are articulated and transferable to most Illinois public four-year colleges and universities. Students planning to transfer without completing an associate degree are encouraged to select courses with this designation to minimize loss of credit. Consultation with an LLCC student success advisor is recommended.
  • 12 – Courses may be applied toward a certificate or associate in applied science degree. Students planning to transfer without an associate degree should consult an LLCC student success advisor or use Transferology to determine transferability prior to enrollment. 
  • 13 – Courses are for personal development only.
  • 14 – Courses are developmental and may not be applied toward any certificate or degree at LLCC.
  • 16 – Courses provide specific vocational skills and may be applied only toward a Certificate of Personal Development.
