PHI 201 Introduction to Logic

Logic is the study of arguments, which are attempts to try to persuade someone to accept a given conclusion. English language arguments are translated into symbolic form, then using various rules and technical means, the arguments are tested to determine if the conclusion is justified given the available premises. These technical analyses include use of such tools as Venn diagrams, truth tables, and deductive proofs. Three areas of logic are explored in detail: categorical logic, truth-functional logic and formal deduction, as well as informal fallacies. This is primarily, though not exclusively, a technical course designed to improve ability to evaluate both deductive and inductive arguments. R, 11 (3 lecture hours) IAI: H4 906
