EGL 115 Introduction to African American Literature
This course offers an introduction to the rich and diverse traditions of African American literature. It will explore the historical, cultural, and social contexts in which African American writers have created their works. Through reading key texts from the Harlem Renaissance to contemporary literature, students will examine themes such as identity, race, power, resistance, and the impact of systemic oppression. By analyzing novels, poems, essays, and plays, students will critically engage with the ways in which African American writers have used literature to challenge and redefine societal values. This course will also highlight the intersectionality of race, gender, class, and sexuality within African American literature. R, W2, 11 (3 lecture hours)
