EGL 114 Introduction to the Film As Literature

This course is an introduction to the critical study of films and literary texts in which students learn to 'read,' discuss, interpret and write about films and literature with greater awareness, clarity, and skill. Students will study the formal, thematic, and/or historical relationships between literary and cinematic forms, including examination of adaptations and influences that demonstrate the complex interplay between each artistic medium. A variety of genres (drama, poetry, novel, short story, graphic novel) is analyzed in relationship to their film adaptations. Additional films that are not adapted from literature will also be studied in terms of their literary elements and devices. Other cinematic elements may be discussed as they contribute to the study of film as literature. R, W2, 11 (2 lecture hours and 2 laboratory hours) IAI: HF 908
