JRN 101 Beginning Newswriting

This course is designed primarily for students who wish to develop newswriting skills, but it is useful for any student seeking a career in writing, editing, broadcasting, public relations or social media. This course teaches Associated Press writing guidelines and how formats differ in print, online, broadcast and social media. Emphases are placed on organizing stories, writing leads, interviewing sources, researching/fact-checking and writing well under deadline pressure. The course also focuses on journalistic ethics, journalists' role in society, the public's right to know, what constitutes news and how to select news stories.
